History
One of the first hotels to have electric lights,
The Athenaeum is architecturally reminiscent of the elaborate "Saratoga-style" resort hotels of the turn of the century. Ten U.S. Presidents, beginning with Ulysses S. Grant, have visited Chautauqua. Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Duke Ellington, Marian Anderson, Robert Kennedy, and William Clinton, among hundreds of other well-known Chautauqua visitors, have been Athenaeum Hotel guests.
A blend of authentic period furnishings and fixtures, comfortable wicker chairs and settees, romantic lace curtains, scrupulously selected wallpaper and color schemes preserve the Athenaeum's rich historical presence and extend a cordial Victorian-style welcome to our guests.
