Chautauqua’s first ever Traditional Jazz Workshop will be held on the beautiful grounds of the Chautauqua Institution in western New York, with your home base at the historic Athenaeum Hotel. The 4-day session will include ensemble workshops, coaching, jam sessions and performance opportunities in student groups and with faculty members. Students will focus on jazz standards and works from the American Songbook, with emphasis on collective improvisation and ensemble performance. Enjoy social events with faculty and fellow students on beautiful Chautauqua Lake. The workshop culminates in a performance opportunity at the opening session of the 15th Annual Jazz at Chautauqua traditional jazz party on Thursday evening.

No application is necessary to participate in the Chautauqua Traditional Jazz Workshop, but at least an intermediate level of proficiency on your major instrument is expected.

Travel arrangements and transportation to and from the Chautauqua Institution from airport are the responsibility of each participant.
A frequent performer with the late Red Norvo, Howard’s superb solo and accompaniment skills were quickly recognized and sought after for appearances and recordings with such artists as Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Woody Herman and Bud Freeman. A member of the last Benny Goodman orchestra, this multi-insruentalist has recorded and appeared with many respected jazz artists such as Doc Cheatham, Bob Haggart, Rosemanry Clooney and Buck Clayton. He has performed four times at Carnegie Hall, once with Woody Herman and the New York Pops. His talents include composing, arranging and orchestrating; a recording arranged by Dan featuring the great Bobby Short garnered a Grammy nomination. Duke Heitger is one of the most sought after players on the international scene today. Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Heitger now calls New Orleans home. Since arriving on the jazz scene there in 1991, Heitger worked with classic jazz stalwarts such has Engelbert Wrobel, Marty Grosz, Dick Hyman, John Gill, and Banu Gibson. Kerry Lewis started his professional career as a bass player for Banu Gibson and her New Orleans Hot Jazz Band. More recently, he played with the Leroy Jones Quintet and Michael White’s Traditional Liberty jazz Band. He has been recorded on numerous CDs for various musical artists covering the blues, country, rock and jazz. Rebecca Kilgore, Vocals
Rebecca Kilgore is one of America’s leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the Great American Songbook. With over 30 recordings in her discography, some of her most notable with Dave Frishberg on piano. Ricky Malichi’s professional music career reads like a who’s who in the music community. He has performed with greats such as David “Fathead” Newman, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Mann, Chuck Berry, Mose Allison, Chris Calloway, Regina Carter, Herb Ellis and Richie Cole, to name a few. One of today’s most wide-ranging instrumentalists, Scott Robinson has been heard on tenor sax with Buck Clayton, trumpet with Lionel Hampton, clarinet with Paquito D’Rivera and bass sax with the New York City Opera, in addition to a cross-section of jazz’s greats representing nearly every imaginable style of music, from Braff to Braxton. A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, he has been awarded four fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts and has been with winner of a number of Down Beat Critics polls and Jazz Journalists Association awards in recent years.
Born in Vigevano, Italy, Rossano Sportiello has established himself as a skilled jazz musician all over the globe. When Rossano met legendary jazz pianist and educator Barry Harris over a decade ago, Harris called him “The best stride piano player” he has ever heard. Rossano received the 2009 Ascona Jazz Award, and continues to make frequent appearances at this festival, as well as with the likes of Slide Hampton, Cark Terry, Barry Harris, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bob Wilber, Warren Vache, Eddie Locke, Dick Hyman, and many, many others. www.rossanosportiello.com
